||
| Having worked with these scores and kids for many years I have found it helpful to introduce each piece in certain ways that help to understand the background of the music and its setting as well as inspire the imagination and enthusiasm of the kids. On this page are some suggestions that you may find helpful starting points. The pictures below can help to set the mood of this piece. - Keith Sharp | ||

| About the TOLKIEN MINIATURES: |
"All that the unsuspecting Bilbo saw that morning was an old man with a staff. He has a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which his long white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots. "Gandalf!" "Tales and adventures sprouted up all over the place wherever he went, in the most extraordinary fashion."- extracts from The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien |
| About WHISPERS IN THE DARK |
Imagine being alone and lost in a dark place. Worse still, bad things are lurking....."The Hobbit jumped nearly out of his skin when the hiss came in his ears, and he suddenly saw the pale green eyes sticking out at him."- extract from The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien Whispers in the Dark' captures a sense of trepidation and the underlying courage needed to venture forth in the face of fear. It is aimed at the advanced junior to intermediate level player. Lyrical lines in the 1st and 2nd violin parts work through first, second and third positions with a variety of bowing articulations. Cello and viola lines are rich with melody and countermelody. Harmonics and pizzicatos appear in the fabric. Feels lovely to play with plenty of musical interest throughout. Optional 2-part choir score and piano accompaniment are also provided in the pack. Massed choir and strings may provide variety and further enhance that school concert performance. Enjoy this 'Music House' classic. Another classic addition to any string library. |
| Useful points to remember: |
| ˇ Playing range between 3rd year and 7th year of learning. ˇ Useful study in legato playing. ˇ Evenly written for all parts. ˇ 2 part vocals that further enhance the texture. ˇ Great for Choir and Strings performance. |
