SALTY SAILOR'S SONG --- back

Having worked with these scores and kids for many years I have found it helpful to introduce each piece in certain ways that help to understand the background of the music and its setting as well as inspire the imagination and enthusiasm of the kids. On this page are some suggestions that you may find helpful starting points. The pictures below can help to set the mood of this piece. - Keith Sharp
About the CELTIC series:
About SALTY SAILOR'S SONG
On the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland, fishing has always been the main industry. The traditional fishing methods of their ancestors are still used by some of the islanders. These island fishermen lead a rugged life. Many still speak Gaelic and hold ceilidh, traditional gatherings for music, dancing, and poetry.
A delightful Celtic sounding tune in the key of E minor (Aeolian mode.) A SALTY SAILOR’S SONG has been written for Junior String Ensemble.  It consists of three main lines - melody, harmony and bass - and a simple piano accompaniment.
The melody is lovely for students of various standards to play and the harmony is very easy. A cello melody is included for individual extension. A backing track, playable on midi sequencer is available as a further teaching aid. A flexible arrangement of an appealing tune.
Useful points to remember:
· Simple ensemble structure (3 part + piano)
· Works well with unison melody and piano accompaniment.
· Most 3rd year players and some 2nd years will manage the tune.
· Ensemble works well with older players taking the harmony parts.
· All parts include Melody and Harmony on A3 sheet.
· Excellent study for middle to upper-half elbow swings
· Students will be encouraged to read melody since it moves mostly in steps and quavers.
· Consider featuring your top Bass players on the melody line as a solo
Your suggestions are important and welcome!
