||
| Having worked with these scores and kids for many years I have found it helpful to introduce each piece in certain ways that help to understand the background of the music and its setting as well as inspire the imagination and enthusiasm of the kids. On this page are some suggestions that you may find helpful starting points. The pictures below can help to set the mood of this piece. - Keith Sharp | ||

| About the TOLKIEN MINIATURES: |
"All that the unsuspecting Bilbo saw that morning was an old man with a staff. He has a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which his long white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots. "Gandalf!" "Tales and adventures sprouted up all over the place wherever he went, in the most extraordinary fashion."- extracts from The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien |
| About RIDERS OF ROHAN |
"The horses were of great stature, strong and clean-limbed; their gray coats glistened, their long tails flowed in the wind, their manes were braided on their proud necks. The Men that rode them matched them well: tall and long limbed; their hair, flaxen-pale, flowed under their light helms, and streamed in long braids behind them; their faces were stern and keen." - extract from The Two Towers by J.R.R.Tolkien.An epic work featuring galloping rhythms and sonorous cello/bass melodies in the key of B minor. This piece will capture the imagination and enliven ensemble spirit with its rich musical fabric. Another classic addition to any string library. |
| Useful points to remember: |
| · Playing range between 4th year and 6th year of learning. · Middle School, Junior High standard. · Celli and Bass open with the grand main theme. · Excellent study for middle of the bow elbow swings. · Lots of useful stroke work in the upper string parts. · Works well either slower and on the string or faster and off. Craft the speed to suit the ensemble’s bow technique. |
