KINGS OF STONE --- back

Having worked with these scores and kids for many years I have found it helpful to introduce each piece in certain ways that help to understand the background of the music and its setting as well as inspire the imagination and enthusiasm of the kids. On this page are some suggestions that you may find helpful starting points. The pictures below can help to set the mood of this piece. - Keith Sharp
About the TOLKIEN MINIATURES:
"All that the unsuspecting Bilbo saw that morning was an old man with a staff. He has a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which his long white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots. "Gandalf!" "Tales and adventures sprouted up all over the place wherever he went, in the most extraordinary fashion."
- extracts from The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien
About KINGS OF STONE
Frodo peering forward saw in the distance two great rocks approaching: like tall pinnacles or pillars of stone they seemed. "Behold the Argonath, the Pillars of the Kings!" cried Aragorn. Upon great pedestals founded in the deep waters stood two great kings of stone..... - from Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkien.

KINGS OF STONE, a masterful creation, portrays reflective sadness and dignity within its broad resonance and minor tone colours. This warm, lyrical piece is technically easy.
Its flexible setting allows for odd ensemble combinations and disparate student standard. An easy violin/cello part is very useful when including elementary players. The rolling piano accompaniment completes a wonderful texture.
Useful points to remember:
· Works very well with Melody and piano accompaniment. 1st and 2nd years will manage the tune.
· Extension parts offer an excellent study in larghetto bowing.
· The rolling piano texture allows the celli to take on a line that weaves between the main theme.
· Excellent study for middle of the bow elbow swings.
· Extension parts aimed at 3rd to 5th years.
