DWARF MARCH --- back

Having worked with these scores and kids for many years I have found it helpful to introduce each piece in certain ways that help to understand the background of the music and its setting as well as inspire the imagination and enthusiasm of the kids. On this page are some suggestions that you may find helpful starting points. The pictures below can help to set the mood of this piece. - Keith Sharp
About the TOLKIEN MINIATURES:
"All that the unsuspecting Bilbo saw that morning was an old man with a staff. He has a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which his long white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots. "Gandalf!" "Tales and adventures sprouted up all over the place wherever he went, in the most extraordinary fashion."
- extracts from The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien
About DWARF MARCH
“Far over the misty mountains cold; To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day; to seek the pale enchanted gold." "At first they passed through hobbit-lands, a wide respectable country inhabited by decent folk, with good roads, an inn or two.....- extracts from The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Written in the key of A minor, DWARF MARCH is a sturdy tune in quavers and crotchets which may be performed successfully on or off the string.
The middle section features a sonorous cello and bass melody accompanied by a repeated quaver texture in the violins.
This piece captivates student and audience imagination beautifully.
Useful points to remember:
· Playing range between 2nd year and 4th year of learning.
· Sonorous Cello/Bass melody through the middle of the piece.
· Evenly written for all parts.
· Encourages chunky, in-the-string playing.
