CROCODILE HORNPIPE  ---  back

Having worked with these scores and kids for many years I have found it helpful to introduce each piece in certain ways that help to understand the background of the music and its setting as well as inspire the imagination and enthusiasm of the kids. On this page are some suggestions that you may find helpful starting points. The pictures below can help to set the mood of this piece. - Keith Sharp

About CROCODILE HORNPIPE
Caters for a broad range of student standards within one ensemble. The composition sits well in first position for all of the violins/violas. The cello and bass pass briefly through second position.
The theme, simple, snappy and in D major, is reminiscent of another well-known crocodile song. Other features include repeated spiccato textures in the upper violins, a cello pizzicato walking bass and a first violin fiddle-style break.
The bass line anchors the arrangement and piano provides optional texture and support. An effective piece and fun for all!
“Cleverly written for all parts.” AUSTA Q review, Feb 1998.
Useful points to remember:
· Playing range between 2nd year and 5th year of learning.
· Study in spiccato and staccato
· Vampy extension lines for celli and 1st fiddles
· 3rd Violins and Violas have the tune.
· Also works well in a middle school setting where more refined stroke can be used.
Your suggestions are important and welcome!
