| Having worked with these scores and kids for many years I have found it helpful to introduce each piece in certain ways that help to understand the background of the music and its setting as well as inspire the imagination and enthusiasm of the kids. On this page are some suggestions that you may find helpful starting points. The pictures below can help to set the mood of this piece. - Keith Sharp | ||

| About BILGE RAT BLUES | ||
Violins indulge in a slow blues tune (useful for
encouraging vibrato,) accompanied by chromatic glissandi, walking bass and
piano. The tune sounds well in third position, but is playable in
first. Elementary instrumentalists will manage the simple 3rd
violin/viola part and cellists will enjoy their chromatic pizzicato and
rich, smooth tune. |
||
| "Way down below the deck the bilge rats dwell, In a dark smoky place, some say like hell, Pull out that bass fiddle and oily finger slide, Join in with the “Bilge-boys” on their sleazy blues ride.” |
||
| Useful points to remember: | ||
| · Playing range between 3rd year and 6th year of learning. · Plays around with 12 bar blues form. · Evenly written for all parts. · Piano required · Violin 1 and 2 parts work very well in 3rd position. · Ideally sounds better with the use of vibrato. |
